THE BEGINNING
Following the collapse of HIH in 2000, the Home Owners Warranty (HOW) scheme throughout Australia was 'in a shambles'. It was extremely difficult for builders to gain HOW through the remaining insurance companies and the 'industry' was hurting like never before. Moreover, concerns by builders at this time were ignored by politicians as well as most building groups and the insurance industry. Nobody was looking after the builder.
Phil thought 'there has to be a better way' and based on his building experience, developed the ABS concept. With the backing of hundreds of builders throughout Australia, Phil spent the next 4 years 'kicking down doors' to get his concept accepted. Finally, in late 2004 Australian Building Services was born. At last there was an alternative for the builder that freed him from the restrictions currently imposed and allowed him to do what he does best – build.
Not stopping there, Phil has further enhanced ABS's services to become a 'one stop shop' for builders. Covering all the insurances they need as well as facilities for gaining CPD points, mediation services and building advice, ABS is there for the builder. No other organisation in Australia offers the same service and the many testimonials that have been received bears proof of ABS's ongoing commitment to its builders.
THE FOUNDER
The Founder, Phil Sim, has extensive building industry experience. After completing a 5 year apprenticeship in 'residential house building' in New Zealand, Phil progressed through the building industry as a General Foreman, Site Manager, Project Manager and Construction Manager both in New Zealand and Australia. His experience covers over 40 years in the building industry as a successful builder across all disciplines including domestic residential, high and low rise residential apartments, commercial office blocks and shopping centres.
